Physical Refining Process
The main steps of physical refining are as follows:
1. Degumming: Common methods include acid degumming, enzymatic degumming, and dry degumming. In acid degumming, citric or phosphoric acid is added to convert non-hydratable phospholipids into hydratable forms, which are then removed by centrifugation. Enzymatic degumming uses special phospholipase enzymes (such as PLC or PLA) to further reduce phosphorus content. For oils with low phospholipid content, dry degumming can be applied by adding bleaching earth directly.
2. Bleaching: The degummed oil goes to the bleaching section. Bleaching earth or activated clay is added to absorb pigments, trace metals, and other impurities. After mixing under vacuum, the spent clay is removed by filtration.
3. Physical Deacidification & Deodorization: Direct steam is injected to strip off free fatty acids, odor substances, and other volatile components. Compared with chemical refining, this method is especially suitable for oils with higher acid value. It does not require caustic soda, so no soapstock is produced and environmental impact is lower. The process also provides higher refining yield and more stable oil quality.
4. Cooling and Polishing Filtration: After deodorization, the oil is cooled to a proper temperature. A final filtration step removes any remaining particles to ensure clear and stable refined oil.
