Semi-Continuous Oil Refining Process
- Deacidification / Neutralization:
Caustic soda (NaOH) is added to react with the free fatty acids (FFA) present in the crude oil. The reaction produces soapstock, which is then separated and discharged from the system. - Degumming:
Hot water (or acid solution) is mixed with the crude oil to hydrate and remove gums such as phospholipids. The treated oil is then dried to remove moisture before entering the bleaching process. - Decolorization / Bleaching:
Bleaching earth (activated clay) is added to the oil to adsorb pigments, trace metals, and other impurities. The spent bleaching earth is then removed through a filtration system. - Deodorization:
This is the main difference from the batch refining process. In a semi-continuous refinery, deodorization is carried out in a continuous deodorization tower under high temperature and vacuum conditions. Steam is used to strip away odor compounds, residual free fatty acids, and peroxide substances, resulting in refined oil with improved flavor, stability, and quality. After final filtration, the refined oil is ready for storage or further processing.
