Continuous Solvent Extraction Line for Oil Production
Leaching for oil production refers to the application of the extraction principle. A suitable organic solvent that can dissolve oil is selected and brought into contact with the oil-bearing material (by soaking or spraying) so that the oil is extracted from the material.
Two types of technologies are used: batch technology and continuous technology. For capacities lower than 20 TPD, a batch solvent extraction unit is recommended. For capacities ranging from 20 to 2,000 tonnes per day, a continuous process is recommended.
Currently, the largest solvent extraction equipment can handle a capacity of up to 10,000 tonnes per day per unit. The most commonly used solvent extraction machines are classified according to their main structural features and operating modes:
Rotary extractor: 20–500 TPD
Loop-type extractor: 200–2,000 TPD
- Drag-chain extractor: 200–2,000 TPD

The rotary extractor (or the rotocel extractor) is widely used for extracting oil from pre-pressed cakes. Its rotating cell design enables immersion extraction and reduces meal fines in the miscella, improving crude oil quality and minimizing scaling in the evaporation system. The extractor is driven by a rack-and-gear mechanism, ensuring low power consumption, reduced maintenance cost, and low operating noise.
The loop-type extractor uses a chain drive system and is suitable for both high-oil and low-oil content materials for direct extraction. It operates with percolation filtration to improve extraction efficiency. The bending section enhances material movement, while the self-solvent spraying system ensures effective extraction. Adjustable discharge speed provides uniform material transfer and stable desolventizing.
The drag chain extractor (drag chain scraper type) is a simplified variation of the loop extractor. It adopts a box structure without a bending section, resulting in lower equipment height. Materials are mixed by a turnover device between layers to maintain good permeability. Residual oil can reach 0.6–0.8%. This extractor is suitable for materials with high oil content and high powder content.
Production Process
Process Flow of Large-Scale Solvent Extraction Plant:
There are four main processes in an oil solvent extraction plant: the solvent extractor, the DTDC system, the evaporator and stripping tower, and the condenser. The solvent extractor is the core equipment.
In the solvent extractor, the oil cake is soaked in a solvent (n-hexane is the most common one) for a certain time. After this you will get two products: wet meal and miscella (a mixture of oil and solvent).
Then the wet meal goes to the DTDC (Desolventizer Toaster Dryer Cooler) system, where the solvent is evaporated and removed. After this you can get dry meal, which contains less than 1% residual oil and is suitable for animal feed production.
And the miscella is sent to the evaporator and stripping tower to remove the solvent and obtain crude oil. Finally, the solvent vapor is condensed and recovered by the condenser so it can be reused in the extraction process.
