Seed Oil Production

Processing of seeds is done based on the one or more differing physical characters of seed (i.e.) seed size, length, weight, shape, surface texture, color, affinity to liquid and electrical conductivity.  In the  process of seed oil production, first phase consists of scalping, debearding, hulling, shelling to make the seed flow readily through the grader and cleaner (conditioning and pre-cleaning).  The second phase includes the removal of inert material, weed seeds, other crop and broken seeds that are larger or smaller than the crop seed. In the final (separating and upgrading) phase, undesirable materials are separated from the seed.

Hexane is typically used for this purpose. The recovered solvent / oil mixture is called miscella and the extracted flakes spent flake or cake. Solvent extraction plant generally consists of a sequence of four operations:

  • Physical removal of oil from the feedstock (seed, husk, etc.) in the extractor.
  • Desolventising-toasting of the de-oiled meal, often combined with drying and cooling of the meal.
  • Distillation, to remove the solvent of the extracted oil.
  • Recovery of the solvent for re-use in the reactor.

Equipment Used in the Seed Oil Production Plant

  • Pre-extraction equipment; eg viberating sieve, dehullers, seed / kernel crackers, roasters.

  • Extraction equipment; manual presses, integrated oil expellers.

  • Equipment for basic refining of the oil; oil filter press, settling tanks.
